The Conversation That Changed a Young Life

In the few months since we began our Cyber Safety Awareness initiative, many families have approached us seeking guidance after recognizing signs and situations similar to those discussed in our awareness sessions. One such case left a lasting impression on our team and highlighted how digital dependency can quietly affect a young person's life. It began with a phone call from a concerned father. His voice carried both frustration and worry as he spoke about the sudden changes he had noticed in his teenage daughter. Until recently, she had been a cheerful and talented child who actively participated in cultural activities. During her vacation, her parents enrolled her in a dance class, hoping she would enjoy her free time before entering Grade 10. Having won several prizes in the past, they believed it would be an opportunity for her to continue doing something she loved. However, things did not go as expected. Within a short period, she lost interest in attending classes. Her dance teacher eventually informed the parents that it would be better if she stopped coming because she was no longer participating or showing enthusiasm. The family was puzzled. The same child who once loved singing and performing now seemed disconnected from the activities that had once brought her joy. As the days passed, the changes became more noticeable. She preferred spending her time on her mobile phone and showed little interest in family conversations or social gatherings. Even when a close relative's wedding approached, she refused to attend despite repeated requests from her family. Her world seemed to be shrinking, with most of her attention focused on her online conversations. Concerned by her behaviour, her father attempted to take away the phone, hoping it would help her reconnect with her surroundings. Instead, it led to arguments and resistance. Seeing her daughter's distress, the mother occasionally allowed her to use the phone without her father's knowledge. What began as an attempt to maintain peace at home only deepened the problem. The late-night phone usage increased, and the child often stayed awake chatting for hours. She would quietly take her mother's phone after everyone had gone to bed, spending long periods online when she believed nobody was watching. The situation eventually reached a point where both parents felt helpless. What worried them most was not the phone itself, but the realization that their daughter was slowly withdrawing from family life, hobbies, and personal interactions. Looking for answers, they reached out to our team for support. When the family met with us, our first step was not to blame the child or focus solely on the device. Instead, we listened. Through patient conversations with both the parents and the child, we explored the reasons behind the behaviour and helped the family understand that technology-related issues often have emotional and social dimensions. Together, we worked on rebuilding communication, establishing healthier digital habits, and creating an environment where trust could replace conflict. Over time, the family began to recognize that cyber safety is not only about protecting devices and accounts. It is also about protecting relationships, emotional wellbeing, and the healthy development of young minds in a connected world. This case serves as a reminder that significant changes in behaviour should never be ignored. Behind every screen may be a story that requires understanding, guidance, and support. Through awareness, early intervention, and open conversations, families can navigate digital challenges together and help young people build a healthier relationship with technology.
